If you’re new to camping, welcome to the adventure! There’s something magical about falling asleep under the stars, waking up to the sight of wild deer, and sipping your morning coffee surrounded by birdsong and ancient trees. At Long Meadow Campsite, in the heart of the New Forest National Park, we know just how special your first camping trip can be.
Whether you’re planning a weekend away or a longer stay, a little preparation goes a long way. We’ve put together this helpful guide, with top tips for first-time campers, families, and those exploring dog-friendly camping in the New Forest.
Choosing the right campsite
Choosing the right campsite is key to a smooth and enjoyable camping experience. At Long Meadow Campsite in Brockenhurst, we make your stay easy, comfortable, and stress-free – ideal for first-time campers, families, and those seeking a dog-friendly New Forest campsite.
Surrounded by stunning nature and close to local shops, we offer a range of pitch options to suit every setup, including grass, hardstanding, and electric hook-up.
Practice putting up your tent at home
If you’ve recently bought a new tent, have a practice run a few days before the holiday to figure out how it fits together without time pressure of the day itself. This will save time and reduce stress when you arrive, particularly if you’re camping for the first time with children or pets.
Make a camping checklist
A good checklist will help you avoid overpacking or forgetting essentials. Here’s what we recommend bringing for your New Forest camping holiday:
- Sleeping bag
- A portable charger if you’re staying on a non-electric pitch
- Clothing: waterproofs, extra socks, and a warm jumper or two (the New Forest can be chilly at night!)
- Comfortable footwear, there are plenty of scenic trails to explore, so pack sturdy walking shoes or comfy trainers
- Food, drinks, and a way to cook (BBQs are welcome at Long Meadow – raised off the ground. Please note disposable BBQs are banned in the New Forest National Park) And don’t forget to pack some snacks!
- First-aid kit
Arrive before dark
Give yourself plenty of time to set up your pitch and settle in. Setting up camp in the daylight is much easier and it gives you time to settle in, explore the campsite, and maybe even catch a New Forest sunset.
Respect the wildlife and local area
The New Forest is home to roaming ponies, deer, and other wildlife. Enjoy them from a distance and keep food securely stored. Never feed or touch the animals and be sure to leave no trace. Take a read of the New Forest Code: New Forest code – New Forest National Park Authority
Plan Activities, Explore the New Forest!
Whether you’re cycling through ancient woodland, spotting wildlife, or popping into a Brockenhurst pub for lunch, there’s so much to see and do. Visit local attractions like Beaulieu Motor Museum, Lymington Harbour and New Forest Wild life park. Don’t forget your camera!

Bring the fun!
Camping is all about making memories. Pack board games or a deck of cards for easy fun with family and friends. Bring a good book to relax with in nature, and don’t forget swing ball, a camping classic! It’s the little moments of laughter that make a family camping trip truly special.
